What is the most vital element of music?

Question of the day-
What is the most important element of music? (taken from melody, harmony, rhythm, form, timbre, etc.)

I believe it to be rhythm due to the fact that rhythm keeps the music moving forward and is essential as a communication tool. There are also two types of rhythm--rhythm of form (how the musical line and shape unfolds) and rhythm of meter (the "nuts and bolts").

Discuss as you wish.

  1. I absolutely agree with you. I have the hardest time convincing people of this. They think the melody is everything, but if you completely change the rhythm behind it, you have changed the whole nature of the piece. It appeals to our senses in a completely different way and makes it into a truly different experience.
